xPression Enterprise Edition Components
xPression Enterprise Edition's service-oriented architecture sets the bar for dynamic content publishing technology available today. Based on standards like Java EE, XML, Web Services, JMS, and MS .Net, xPression provides a comprehensive set of components for document design, assembly, composition, output processing and delivery. These components are organized in a layered architecture, as shown in the diagram below. The server components are enabled to be integrated within an Enterprise Content Management (ECM) infrastructure.
Dynamic Document Design Clients
xPression Enterprise Edition takes advantage of best-for-purpose document design tools powered by EMC Document Sciences xPresso® plug-in technology.
xPresso for Adobe InDesign is a plug-in for Windows and Mac that extends InDesign’s capabilities to support rapid design, testing and publishing of highly graphical communications, such as statements, financial reports, marketing collateral, catalogs and other frame-based documents.
xPresso for Word is a plug-in for Microsoft Word 2007 that leverages the features of Word to transform existing static document designs into highly personalized customer communications right from the desktop, including proposals, contracts, invoices and correspondence.

The server comprises two sets of components: publishing components and infrastructure components. The publishing components include:
- xAssemble is a robust rules engine that executes business logic for selecting content and images based on customer data to quickly create customized documents.
- xPublish is the most sophisticated document composition engine available, composing and formatting documents created by xAssemble and producing a large set of electronic and print output formats, including PDF, HTML, AFP, PostScript, PCL, and plain text.
- xBatch is the fastest engine available for running high-volume, unattended batch document production processes.
The infrastructure components provides services for security, load balancing, data access from a variety of sources, content access from ECM systems, the file system or other sources.
xFramework is a published API available through both a COM and Java interface, providing a complete Web Services toolkit for integration.
xAdmin is a Web application that allows System Administrators to easily administer and configure an xPression infrastructure that is right for any business.
xDashboard provides at-a-glance reports and drill down capabilities to easily manage batch jobs, view job and server statistics, monitor job history and much more, all in a Web-based management console.
